Birds are a ship's constant companions during the spring and summer in Antarctica. It seems that they are everywhere. They come in all shapes and sizes. The sea birds sail on the wind, following the ship as it moves through clear water or ice. On calm days, they rest on the bobbing waves. There are dozens of different types of birds in Antarctica. The birds that are best known in Antarctica are penguins. There are several different species of penguins in Antarctica. The largest penguins are the Emperor penguins. Penguins live in large colonies and can be seen on the shore of small islands, swimming, or on bergs, both large and small.

Penguins are protected by the International Antarctic Charter. The Penguins that I came in contact with were noisy almost bossey birds. The squacked and squeeked at us when we were on foot, and seemed to yell in chorus at the ship as we sailed past their resting areas.
