The Antarctic Link Project is an ongoing educational web site documenting the work of teachers and researchers in Antarctica. I will be adding to, and updating the site in an attempt to keep the information available to teachers and students as current as possible. Last Update 8/1/99

About the Antarctic Link Project

The Antarctic Link Project is an effort to use the Internet to link students and teachers with teachers doing research in Antarctica as part of the National Science Foundation Teacher Enhancement Program.

The Antarctic Link Project began as an effort to use the Internet to link students and teachers at Lincoln High School with Steven Stevenoski during the Antarctic Summer in November and December 1995. Mr. Steven Stevenoski, a science teacher from Lincoln High School, Wisconsin Rapids, WI, was involved in Antarctic research aboard the research icebreaker, Nathaniel B. Palmer for 6 weeks, starting the last week of October, 1995 until December, 1995. The Palmer is a 280 foot ice breaker with an international charter for research in the Antarctic. The researchers on this cruise were investigating seismic formations which could potentially lead to the discovery of the southern most deep ocean geothermal vents ever discovered.

Students and teachers had the opportunity to communicate with Mr. Stevenoski by sending Email to: ssteven@wctc.net, while Mr. Stevenoski was aboard the ship. Mail was moderated and forwarded to the Palmer once a day. Answers to questions posed to Mr. Stevenoski and the researchers were included in daily logs written by Mr. Stevenoski and sent by satellite from the ship.. The daily logs are archived at this site and were originally posted by Bob Manthey in November and December 1995.

The University of Texas Institute for Geophysics (UTIG) developed a web page to update scientists and students at the university about their research during the cruise. At the UTIG site, you can find official weekly reports from chief scientist, Lawrence A. Lawyer, as well as an official description of the project.
