The Waushara
County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail was
officially formed in April 1999. It is our
goal to help create, support and protect just
one small portion within our county, of a
continuous 1,200 mile system of parks and
trails tracing unique Ice Age formations
across Wisconsin.
The Ice Age
National Scenic Trail, established by
Congress in 1980, meanders along the terminal
moraine left by the great Wisconsin glacier
over 10,000 years ago. It begins at the
Powatomi State Park on the Door County shores
of Lake Michigan and winds south over the
long moraines along the driftless area
where the glacier halted, passes through the
wilds of Chequamegon National Forest, and
ends where the melting glaciers carved the
incredible Dells of the St. Croix River at
Interstate State Park.
Today 600
miles of the Ice Age Trail are complete with
only 600 more to go. When our portion in
Waushara County has been completed it will be
approximately 50 miles long. We are one of 31
other counties with this wonderful
opportunity to help preserve Wisconsin's
cultural and glacial heritage for the
education and enjoyment of present and future
generations.
